Varicose veins is a disease of the veins, manifested by an increase in their size, a change in their shape and a decrease in their elasticity. The superficial veins of the lower extremities, the venous plexus of the rectum, the veins of the portal system and the spermatic cord are particularly affected.
The development of varicose veins is favored by difficulties with blood drainage through the venous system in the case of systematically prolonged stays on the legs in connection with professional activities, compression of the pelvic veins by the uterus during pregnancy, congestion in the pelvic veins, e. g. in the case of systematic constipation, sedentary work etc.
Sitting slows circulation and causes blood to stagnate. Doing nothing for a long time and sitting can destroy the heart of people who sit for a long time, deep calf vein thrombosis can develop. Sitting cross-legged is harmful because you can put pressure on the popliteal artery, which can clog the veins.
Clothing and shoes should not be too tight, as this can also slow blood flow. Walking on grass, dirt, or just walking barefoot around the house improves circulation and strengthens the heart. Congenital weakness of the venous wall and insufficiency of the venous valves predispose to the disease. Ulcers can develop over time due to blood malnutrition.
One of the early symptoms of the disease is a feeling of heaviness in the legs, dull or stabbing pains and cramps at night. Left untreated, varicose veins become hard and dense over time, and ulcers and bleeding are common in the legs.
Varicose veins that form in the scrotum are called varicocele (varicose veins of the spermatic cord). When they occur in the rectum, they are known as hemorrhoids.
Phlebitis (inflammation of the veins), varicose veins, severe itching, discoloration of the skin (which often turns copper-red) are common complications of this disease. But only a small percentage of those who have varicose veins develop varicose veins. It is believed that people with varicose veins have congenital, weak-walled veins.
But weak vessel walls are most likely the result of poor nutrition, toxemia, innervation (decreased nervous condition), and lack of exercise. When varicose veins form during pregnancy, in most cases they disappear after childbirth. With the help of sufficiently active physical exercises, varicose veins that arose during pregnancy can also be eliminated in the woman's position.
Unsuccessful surgery to remove or drain veins Using elastic stockings or bandages to support the veins is only half the measure and eventually leads to such weakening of the tissues that the condition becomes chronic or much more difficult to treat.
How to prevent varicose veins:
- Avoid sitting in one position for a long time, so that the muscles do not become numb, and standing for a long time;
